Abstract
This study’s aim is to analyze and compare the ideological tendencies in Korean newspapers, during the time of President Roh’s administration; especially on South-North Korea relations. To do so, six of well-known Korean newspapers were studied; these are of Chosun Ilbo, Joong Ang Ilbo, Dong A Ilbo – ‘the conservative’ newspapers – and Hankyoreh Shinmun, Kyunghyang Shinmun, Seoul Shinmun, representing ‘the progressive’ newspapers. Chosun Ilbo has, this study points out, the most conservative tones; Dong A Ilbo and Joong Ang Ilbo come next. Hankyoreh Shinmun is with most progressive color; Kyunghyang Shinmun and Seoul Shinmun follow. The Chosun - Joong Ang – Dong A Ilbo show strong ties in ideological tendencies and their tones are comparably consistent with each other, whereas Hankyoreh – Kyunghyang – Seoul Shinmun do not always share the same views, especially regarding rather sensitive issues. In fact, the ideological ties between Hankyoreh – Kyunghyang – Seoul Shinmun are relatively weak; Hankyoreh Shinmun shows very progressive attitudes while Kyunghyang Shinmun, and Seoul Shinmun take rather moderate tones. Therefore, the conclusion of this study is that, it may be unreasonable to make out the ‘Chosun - Joong Ang – Dong A Ilbo Versus Hankyoreh – Kyunghyang – Seoul Shinmun’ classification in the first place.
