- 5) Manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with the "Manuscript Preparation Guidelines" separately established by the Editorial Board.
- 6) For co-authored works, the lead author and co-authors must be clearly designated upon submission.

Chapter 3. Review
Article 7 (Review and Revision Process)
- 1) Submitted manuscripts undergo the following four-stage review process to determine publication in East Asian Studies.
- A. Stage 1: Upon receiving a manuscript, the Editor-in-Chief or Editorial Board immediately reviews whether the submitted manuscript and Manuscript Submission Form comply with the journal's editorial regulations. For manuscripts deemed suitable, the Editorial Board selects three reviewers and sends a "Review Request Form" (Form 2) to each reviewer; for foreign reviewers, an English "Review Request Form" (Form 2-1) is sent.
- B. Stage 2: Reviewers must complete and submit a "Review Report" (Form 3) within 15 days of receiving the review commission; foreign reviewers must complete an English "Review Report" (Form 3-1). If the review report is not submitted within this period, the Editorial Board may replace the reviewer.
- C. Stage 3: The Editorial Board records the first review results on a "Review Results Notification" (Form 4)—for foreign contributors, an English "Review Results Notification" (Form 4-1)—and immediately forwards it to the author. If reviewers request revisions, the author must submit the revised manuscript to the Editorial Board within the designated deadline. For manuscripts receiving an "Accept after Revision" decision, the Editorial Board reviews whether revisions have been made; for manuscripts receiving a "Resubmit after Revision" decision, one of the original reviewers is asked to re-review the revised manuscript.
- D. Stage 4: For manuscripts that have completed the first review and re-review, the Editorial Board makes the final publication decision in accordance with the review decision criteria in Article 8, respecting the reviewers' opinions to the greatest extent possible unless there are special circumstances. The Editorial Board notifies the author of the final review results.
- 2) Manuscript review and Editorial Board meetings are conducted with the author anonymized, and during the review or meeting process, the editorial secretary may delete passages that could identify the author if necessary.
Article 8 (Reviewer Selection)
- 1) The Editorial Board selects a pool of reviewer candidates for each field and recommends reviewers for submitted manuscripts, encouraging review by experts outside the Editorial Board where possible. In particular, when the author of a submitted manuscript is affiliated with the Editorial Board or the Institute's Research Committee, external expert review is the principle.
- 2) Reviewers who have academic or personal ties with the author of the submitted manuscript are excluded in principle.
- 3) Three reviewers are assigned in principle; however, for manuscripts receiving a "Resubmit after Revision" decision, re-review may be conducted by one reviewer.
Article 9 (Review and Evaluation Criteria)
- 1) The review and evaluation criteria for submitted manuscripts are as follows:
- A. Validity of the research question
- B. Validity of the research methodology
- C. Originality of the research
- D. Academic contribution
- E. Structure and organization of the argument
- F. Appropriateness of related literature and sources
- G. Adherence to the Manuscript Preparation Guidelines
- 2) Detailed matters such as score conversion for manuscript review and evaluation follow the "Manuscript Review and Evaluation Criteria" (Form 2).
Article 10 (Review Decision)
- 1) Reviewers assign one of four grades: "Accept" (A), "Accept after Revision" (B), "Resubmit after Revision" (C), or "Reject" (D).
- 2) The Editorial Board has final review decision authority over the results of the three reviewers under the following decision criteria:
Review Results Decision Review Results Decision A A A Accept A C C Resubmit after Revision A A B Accept A C D Resubmit after Revision A A C Accept after Revision B C C Resubmit after Revision A A D Accept after Revision B C D Resubmit after Revision A B B Accept after Revision C C C Resubmit after Revision A B C Accept after Revision C C D Reject A B D Accept after Revision A D D Reject B B B Accept after Revision B D D Reject B B C Accept after Revision C D D Reject B B D Resubmit after Revision D D D Reject - 3) Authors receiving an "Accept after Revision" decision must submit a "Revision Report" (Form 5) reflecting the reviewers' comments to the Editorial Board.
- 4) If an author who has received an "Accept after Revision" or "Resubmit after Revision" decision does not submit the revised manuscript within the designated period, the Editorial Board may render a "Reject" decision.
- 5) Personal information about reviewers and review results shall not be disclosed to any third party.

- 1) East Asian Studies is composed of research articles, research notes, and appendices (translations, book reviews, field reports, introductions to institute activities, etc.).
- 2) In accordance with the Editorial Board's editorial policy, research articles consist of thematic special articles and general articles, both of which undergo rigorous review procedures. Special articles, however, are accepted with restrictions on submission topics.

- 3) However, exceptions may be made when approved by the Editorial Board, considering the nature of the topic or the significance of the work.
