Publication Regulations for East Asian Studies

Chapter 1. General Provisions

Article 1 (Purpose)

These regulations govern all matters related to the editing, review, and publication of East Asian Studies.

Article 2 (Scope of Application)

These regulations apply to editorial planning, manuscript selection and review, and publication-related matters.

Chapter 2. Editing

Article 3 (Editorial Planning)

  • A. Editorial planning is conducted by resolution of the Editorial Board.
  • B. Special issues must be finalized at least four months before publication.
  • C. Reviews must be completed at least one month before publication.

Article 4 (Submission Guidelines)

  • A. Only unpublished manuscripts on East Asian area studies are eligible for submission.
  • B. Simultaneous submission to multiple journals is prohibited.
  • C. Submission deadlines:
    • January issue: by December 31
    • July issue: by June 30
    • Year-round submissions accepted
  • D. Required documents: Manuscript Submission Form (Form 1), manuscript including Korean or English abstract.
  • E. Manuscripts should be within 150 sheets of 200-character manuscript paper in principle.
  • F. For co-authored works, the lead author must be clearly designated.
  • G. Review fees and publication fees may be charged.

Article 5 (Manuscript Selection and Editing)

  • A. Submitted manuscripts are referred to three reviewers.
  • B. Manuscripts that do not meet quality standards may be excluded from review.
  • C. Copyright of published articles belongs to the Institute for East Asian Studies.
  • D. Authors must submit a Copyright Transfer Agreement.

Article 6 (Printing and Distribution)

Printing and distribution are handled by the editorial secretary and assistants.

Chapter 3. Review

Article 7 (Review and Revision Process)

The review process consists of four stages:

  • Stage 1: The Editor-in-Chief reviews compliance with regulations, selects three reviewers upon approval, and sends review request forms.
  • Stage 2: Reviewers submit review reports within 15 days. Reviewers may be replaced if reports are not submitted on time.
  • Stage 3: First review results are communicated. Revisions must be submitted within the designated deadline. "Resubmit after Revision" decisions are re-reviewed by one of the original reviewers.
  • Stage 4: The Editorial Board makes the final publication decision and communicates the results.

Reviews are conducted anonymously. Passages that may identify the author may be removed.

Article 8 (Reviewer Selection)

  • A. External expert review is encouraged.
  • B. Manuscripts by authors affiliated with editorial board members' institutions are reviewed by external experts in principle.
  • C. Reviewers with academic or personal ties to the author are excluded.
  • D. Standard review: 3 reviewers; re-review: 1 reviewer may suffice.

Article 9 (Review and Evaluation Criteria)

Manuscripts are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • ① Validity of the research question
  • ② Validity of the research methodology
  • ③ Originality of the research
  • ④ Academic contribution
  • ⑤ Structure and organization of the argument
  • ⑥ Appropriateness of related literature and sources
  • ⑦ Adherence to manuscript preparation guidelines

Article 10 (Review Decision)

Reviewers assign one of four grades: "Accept" (A), "Accept after Revision" (B), "Resubmit after Revision" (C), or "Reject" (D).

The Editorial Board determines the final decision based on the following criteria:

  • A. Authors receiving an "Accept after Revision" decision must submit a "Revision Report" (Form 5) reflecting the reviewers' comments.
  • B. If the revised manuscript is not submitted within the designated period, the Editorial Board may render a "Reject" decision.
  • C. Personal information of reviewers and review results shall not be disclosed to any third party.

Chapter 4. Content of East Asian Studies

Article 11 (Content Categories)

  • A. Research Articles: Special/planned articles and general articles (published after rigorous review)
  • B. Research Notes: Works by doctoral students (in formal article format)
  • C. Appendices: Book reviews, translations, field reports, and institute activity introductions

All articles must include Korean and English abstracts, Korean and English keywords, and author biographies in both languages.

Article 12 (Manuscript Length)

  • A. Research articles and research notes: within 150 sheets of 200-character manuscript paper in principle.
  • B. Appendices and other content: within 40 sheets.
  • C. Exceptions may be made with approval from the Editorial Board.

Supplementary Provisions

These regulations were established on August 20, 1998.
These regulations are effective from May 5, 2020. (7th Revision)
