Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between Zhu-Xi’s theory of Dao-tong道統(Confucian orthodoxy) and Dao-xue-jia 道學家(Neo-Confucian)’s theory of Chuan-dao傳道(the transmission of the Dao) during the Northern Song dynasty. This paper focuses on two meanings of Chuan-dao: Ming-dao明道(the academic transmission of Dao) and Xing-dao行道(the political transmission of Dao) in order to present an objective image of Confucian orthodoxy. First, Daoxue- jia emphasized that Ming-dao and Xing-dao should be independently developed, with the goal of uniting them. Second, Dao-xue-jia advocated a joint effort between them and the emperor as a successor of Xing-dao would be most effective in transmitting the Dao. This belief played a key role in promoting the Imperial Instructions(帝王學) and formulating a theory of self-cultivation(修養論).
