Abstract

The present study compared Chung Yung (the doctrine of the mean; Chung: Centrality, Yung: Commonality) and coping mechanism in contemporary psychology in order to inherit Chung Yung constructively. The present study investigated the psychological mechanism of Chung Yung in the context of interpersonal relationships. Assimilation and coping mechanism were presented as the psychological mechanism counterparts of Chung Yun. This comparison of Chung Yung and coping mechanism in contemporary psychology is expected to provide useful implications regarding the constructive inheritance of traditional value of the East-Asia society in the current of the globalization. This approach of cross cultural comparison may contribute to the formation of a new perspective frame beyond the traditional viewpoint for the purpose of self-examination of the East-Asia society.
