Abstract
China has attached great importance to cultivating international status of a responsible power since the mid-1990s. This article examine the specific intention of being responsible power according to China's diplomatic identity. The aspiration of being responsible power is based on the realistic perception. Chinese political elite believe that unrestrained U.S. unipolar dominance is an obstacle to China's being a responsible power. Therefore China has consistently advocated multipolarization as its official policy. Whereas China inevitably rely on the liberalistic methods to realize its great power goal. China actively participate and even initiate multilateralism, try to contribute to global governance and align its interest closer to the U.S. and other great powers. Although the content of responsibility remains somewhat contested, I anticipate that China's realistic aspirations will be restrain and even change gradually by its inevitable liberalistic approaches.
