초록

This paper attempts to deconstruct those studies, theories, and their tendencies prevalent in the age of economic growth, political stability, and sociocultural integration in East Asia. The reexamination of existing social scientific constructs on East Asian modernization has been called for by recent changes in the region's politics and society caused in large part by Japan's "long-term recession" and her neighbors' financial crisis. These development of the 1990s proved those studies and theories, overwhelmingly loud in praising East Asia's rapid growth and political stability, to be basically false or at least substantially deficient. At this juncture, not only existing perspectives, theories, and studies but also their contemporaneous critiques need to be seriously reviewed and, indeed, deconstructed. This particular study shows that the clusters of old economic, political and sociocultural academic works and activities were heavily influenced or even guided by the discourses of that time that extolled and mystified East Asia's rapid growth, maximum stability, and uniform integration. The main text of this paper is devoted to subjecting major theories and studies under such discourses to concrete criticisms in the light of the region's changing situations and new developments, that is, the financial crisis and its subsequent political realignment and social transformations. My discussion ends by concluding that, from its beginning, East Asia's economic growth conceived various contradictions and serious limitations, political stability was only achieved at the expense of significant oppositions and latent conflicts, and sociocultural integration failed to sincerely accommodate resistant minorities and distinct diversities in the new nation.
