Abstract
This paper is a repertoire analysis of the subscription concert programs of the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Daegu Symphony Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, and Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra from 2005 to 2024. This is the first international comparative study between Korea and other countries on orchestra repertoires. It examines performance frequency of orchestral repertoires in terms of not only the musical works, composers, and musical genres, but also the year of the premiere of the musical work, thematic programming, and the repetition cycle of the same piece. For quantitative evaluation of programming decision biased on famous composers or works, the Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI), which measures market concentration, is introduced. In comparison with Sapporo Symphony and Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestras, Incheon Philharmonic and Daegu Symphony Orchestras tend to be more conservative, focusing on standard repertoire.
