Abstract

In this study, the national identity of Korean emigrants in the Philippines was set up and examined. The pattern of Korean emigration to the Philippines can be divided into three periods according to their characteristics, which are closely related to the economic relations or status between Korea and the Philippines. The national identity of these emigrants is closely related to the international status of Korea. In addition, international marriage is another key variable in forming and conveying national identity. Nevertheless existed slight differences, both children born in Korean-Filipino couples and Korean couples in the Philippines have a weak Korean national identity. This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that the Korean emigrants in the Philippines prefer their children to have a transnational identity by speaking English as their primary language, and give not an emphasis on conveying their Korean national identity to their children.
