Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the cause and limitation of Hong Kong Protest that lasted for 79 days from September 28th of 2014. When returned to the mainland China in 1997, several small-sized anti-China movements had been observed. However, a large-scaled civil protest? well organized and long lasting?in Hong Kong is unprecedented. This peculiar phenomenon raises a few questions: 1) what structural changes in Hong Kong politics have triggered the rise of such a large scaled protest? 2) what are the definitive factors that have halted continuation of the protest that ultimately relieved the social tension? To provide answers to the questions above, McAdam`s political process model has been adopted to analyze combination of political opportunity, indigenous organizational strength, and cognition has enabled public mobilization in Hong Kong. In the following, it is concluded that weakened political leadership, deep division within the party due to lack of cohesion, and pro-establishment`s refusal to support the democratization of Hong Kong have ultimately lulled the Hong Kong Protest.
