Abstract
This paper deals with the National Hero Project of Indonesia and the ideologies reflected in it. In Indonesia, the selection of the national heroes has been dominated by the governments. Through this project, the governments have enhanced the nationalism-based narratives and tried to integrate the nation. This project has also taken a role to justify the legitimacies of the regimes. Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia, has selected the national heroes from the circles of the army, politicians in the early cabinets, and intellectuals, who contributed in establishing various nationalist organizations. These heroes can be categorized into a few ideological and religious factions such as Communism, Islam, Christianity, and Nationalism. Most of the heroes were from Java, and thus this project met the criticisms by the people, particularly from outer islands, as Java-centric. Meanwhile, Suharto, the second president who opened the military regime, chose many military figures as the heroes. In addition, many local heroes of the traditional era were now turned into the national heroes as well. The balance between the Javanese and non-Javanese was considered as an important factor in deciding the heroes. As Suharto`s regime was a pro-American one, no more socialism or Communism-influenced intellectuals were selected. In the post-Suharto period, the characteristics of these hero-selection has ensued without significant changes. In the process of selection, the careers of the candidates of the heroes were often manipulated in order to fit into the narratives that the regimes support. Particularly, by interpreting the lives of various local heroes in the national framework, their “invented” careers failed to reflect various socio-political dynamics beyond the frameworks. In addition, the selection of heroes showed male-dominated and elite-oriented, according to which the balanced reflection of society was limited to a degree. With the advent of democratization and free press in the post-Suharto era, some public debates concerning the national heroes have emerged. Many people criticized that the hero-selection by the previous regimes were shackled by the ideologies. Then they demanded the governments to widen the scope of the occupational fields of the candidates. It should be further examined whether this kind of public demand on the project will influence the government`s selection of national heroes in the future.
