Abstract
The fortunate era for the East Asian cooperation has opened. Not only global economic crisis in 2008 but also regime change in Japan and the U.S. has contributed to such an opening. Given that there are still many huddles for regional coordination, however, it is vital to secure continuous dialogue and mutual understanding. This paper thus aimed at analyzing the current status of news media in China, Japan and South Korea in way of improving better communication among East Asian countries. For this purpose, at first, various journalism model associated with East Asian situation has been explored. This study then examined the historical, managerial and socio-political aspect of the media in those three countries. By adopting three case studies including China`s `Melamine Infant Milk,` Japan`s `Indiscriminate Hate Killings` and Korea`s `Yongsan Tragedy,` in final, this paper has compared journalistic norms and values in those media. The results show, while the news media in three countries are attempting to maintain their own model indebted to economic and political system, the Anglo-Saxon model of the U.S. has been gaining wider recognition in the field of journalism. The authors hope this study would provide an opportunity to better grasp regional conditions of the media and contribute to the acceleration of East Asian cooperation.
