Abstract

The MZ generation in Thailand effectively utilized social media system (SNS) for political activities and organizing protests. Consequently, previous research has argued that university students and the Thai public collect information through the internet, leading to an increase in political interest. However, some studies have shown results indicating that SNS usage does not affect the political interest of the MZ generation. This paper argues, based on the debates in previous research, that the MZ generation, who perceive their personal economic outlook as pessimistic, are more likely to increase political interest when collecting government and political information through SNS. This paper uses data from the 5th wave of the Asian Barometer Survey Thailand data and conduct the analysis with ordinal logistic regression. The analysis confirms that the interaction term between SNS and the MZ generation is not statistically significant, but the three-way interaction term involving economic pessimism, the MZ generation, and SNS information collection significantly affects political interest. Furthermore, analyzing the data by separating the 20s and 30s reveals the effect of the three-way interaction term in the 20s.
