Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and evaluate the concept, implementation, and partial achievements of the North Korean 4th industrial revolution. First, I compare the concepts of DPRK’s self-proclaimed new generation industrial revolution with the contemporary 4th Industrial Revolution; then analyze the implementation and outcome of the latest North Korean industralization. The study reveals that DPRK regime under Kim Jong Un has been actively developing diverse scientific technologies, in sectors such as internet, artificial intelligence, mass communication, and is initiating new development in multiple industrial sectors. The conclusion of this paper is that it is imperative for South Korea to also foster inter-Korean cooperation in the areas of the 4th industrial revolution, and to generate new momentum for South Korea’s own economic growth. Further research is necessary to examine in depth, the levels and contents of North Korea’s 4th industrial development and - in preparation for the future lifting of international sanction on North Korea - also formulate future strategies in developing joint-Korean cooperation on achieving the 4th industrial revolution.
