Abstract

Ahn Jung-geun is a proud national hero who increased the ethnic spirit against Japanese imperialism in the hearts of the people of the two Koreas. In addition, He was known not only to the Korean Peninsula but also to neighbor countries such as China, Japan, and Russia during the modern times and has received various reviews. In the modern history of the two Koreas, which have built disparate systems through the history of division and the Cold War, Ahn Jung-geun is a historic figure that makes the two Koreas imagine the same ‘ethnic group’ and share ‘ethnic consciousness’. But at the same time, Ahn Jung-geun is a ‘divided hero’ that is celebrated and contextualized differently according to the changing political situation at home and abroad and the logic of power. Also, the political power of the two Koreas has mobilized and symbolized him in shaping the identity of their national states. The history legitimacy that the two Koreas borrowed during their founding in 1948 was related to the ‘anti-Japanese’ history. As a result, the South Korean government emphasized the succession of the 3.1 independence movements, while the North Korean emphasized Kim Il Sung’s struggle against the Japanese colonial rule, linking this history to strengthening individual legitimacy. The cracks between the left and the right wing at the colonial periods were revealed after the division of the peninsula, and both the two Koreas held exclusive ceremonies to commemorate Ahn Jung-geun, and he is used as a basis for power legitimacy and as a means of social integration. However, in the midst of the democratic movement in South Korea, some raised questions over the political use of Ahn Jung-geun's memorial, and this has caused conflicts over Ahn's memorial. In order for Ahn to function as a ‘mindful turn’ memory for the integration of South and North Korean society ahead of the era of inter-Korean reconciliation and peace on the Korean Peninsula, it is necessary to expand Ahn into the context of the Korean Peninsula, not a national level, and to remount him in accordance with the times.
