Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the emergence of halal consumption and the process of institutionalizing halal products in Indonesia. The ways halal consumption emerged in Islamic discourse, attitudes of Muslim consumers to halal products and the acceleration of institutionalizing halal certification are dealt with. In the second section, existing literatures on halal consumption are to be briefly reviewed. The topic of the next section is the emergence and actualization of Islamic economy in financial and non-financial sectors. In the fourth and fifth sections, the focus is on the expansion, application and institutionalization of halal concept in consumption. Lastly, the paper analyzes halal product certification law enacted in 2014. It will be maintained that religion has become a decisive factor in determining behaviors of Muslim consumers and that halal in consumption has accelerated the process of Islamization having taken place for the last few decades in Indonesia.
