Abstract
This study attempts to explore North Korean media`s coverage of the United States` decision to deploy the THAAD system in South Korea. For this purpose, this study analyzes THAAD-related news articles reported in Rodong Sinmun and Uriminzokkiri from February 7, 2016 to September 9, 2016. As a result, the features of North Korean media`s coverage of the THAAD deployment and its strategic implications are found to be summarized as follows: First, it was found that Pyongyang, by extensively covering anti-THAAD rallies held in South Korea, attempts to propagate a perception that the decision to deploy the THAAD system in South Korea is unjust and wrongful. Second, Pyongyang, through condemning the THAAD deployment, domestically struggles to break away from the image of being isolated. Third, by defining the THAAD deployment as the United State`s means of invading North Korea and maintaining hegemony in the Northeast Asian region, Pyongyang seeks to restore an amicable relations with China and Russia internationally, justify its nuclear weapons development and to win a nuclear power status from the international community.
