Abstract
Soon after the demise of Kim Jeong-Il, the Chairman of the National Defense Commission, in December 2011, Kim Jeong-Eun, his son and the official heir, quickly took office as the commander-in-chief. In 2012, Kim Jeong-Eun assumed the title of Supreme Leader of Democratic People`s Republic of Korea. Unlike his father, Kim Jeong-Il, who only took the position of the Chairman of the National Defense Commission after 3 prolonged years of ruling by his father, Kim Il-Sung`s dying injunctions, yet after even more prolonged years of heir preparation, Kim Jeong-Eun`s succession of power was swift by far. The year 2012 was supposed to be the first year to announce North Korea`s motto of ‘Powerful and Prosperous Nation’ and the 101st year of the declaration of Juche ideology. However, Kim Jeong-Il died less than a month prior to this event, and a young twenty-something heir took control over the country and hence ended the era of Kim Jeong-Il and began the era of Kim Jeong-Eun. The transfer of power took more or less, about 4 months, and as such, it is not easy to seize the currents and changes in cultural arts between the two eras. However, it is purpose of this research to examine how the social changes made with the appearance of a new leader were expressed in the works of cultural arts, specifically through the genre of light comedy. Light comedy is a form of theater that retains characteristics of criticizing and remodeling outdated and adverse characters and social events through entertaining laughs and takes the role of expressing what the people want through the emergence of positive heroes. By selecting 4 light comedy works, either newly created or modified since 2012, namely ‘Love’ (2012), ‘Special Directive’ (2014), ‘Show Off’ (2014, 2015), and ‘Scent’ (2015), the paper examines the phase of time demanded by the people in the era of Kim Jeong-Eun.
