Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze Pyongyang International Film Festival of the D.P.R.K(PIFF) and its internal and external political meaning historically. The event originated in 1987 as the PIFF of the non-aligned and other developing countries, which means that as the name precisely delineated, the goal of the PIFF was cultural exchange and to reinforce the relations between countries of Non-Aligned Movement and other developing countries familiar with North Korea. The film festival returned in 1990 and would be regularly held every other year. North Korea had internationally tried to establish Kim Jong-il`s high leadership as a political heir of Kim Il-sung, founder of North Korea, through the PIFF. Kim Jong-il regarded Kim Il-sung`s anti-Japanese guerrilla activities as his regime legitimacy and politically exploited culture and arts. In particular, movie played a pivotal role in advertizing his regime legitimacy. For these reasons, the PIFF have been the most useful tool to show off his political power and achievements.
