Abstract

This study looks at the problems of Vietnamese marriage migration to Korea and its implications for the multicultural society of Korea. While marriage migration flows have received heightened attention, little concern has been shown for marriage migrants who return to their country of origin. This study focuses on the voices of Vietnamese female migrants from rural villages in the Mekong Delta, who have returned their communities they come from. The returnees’ stories could be summarized as "a sweet dream, a sour ending," between which there were various experiences that caused their imagination and expectations to crumble. The current overwhelming imagination and expectations for "multiculturalism" in Korea might be crumbled as well. Although a number of Vietnamese women immigrate to Korea expecting a better life in every aspect, their lives are not that bright. Their maladjustment brought various adverse effects not only to the sending country but also to the receiving country. Although both countries, Vietnam and Korea, have put much effort to mitigate the unexpected results of this movement, the problems these brides face are still significant.
