Abstract
Before the 1920s, Asakusa was the core of Tokyo`s Film-culture. However, because of the expansion of the suburbs and construction of modern movietheaters in 1930s, Marunouchi rose in popularity to lead Tokyo`s film-culture. As a result, Maruouchi became widely known to Gyeongseong cinema fans who could not experience modern movie-theaters. They longed for the modern movie-theaters of Marunouchi. Accordingly, modern movie-theaters that followed the model of Marunouchi were constructed in Namchon, Gyeongseong. These newly built modern theaters attracted not only Japanese and Koreans. Modern theaters of Namchon propagated Marunouchi`s advanced theaters system, which included advance purchases, a theater attendant, shorter screen hour. To Koreans modern movie-theaters symbolized civilization. Modern movie-theaters and theater systems extended beyond Tokyo, influencing colonial Joseon. Despite their desire for modern movie theater, however, to Koreans, modern theaters were afflicted with discrimination.
