Abstract
A consensus is that the U.S. signed a treaty with Korea in 1882 for commercial interests, while the UK pursued a strategic interest of deterring Russia in the Northeast Asia. This paper investigated primary documents - U.S. and U.K. diplomatic papers - and found that the consensus is at best weak and at worst groundless. The American negotiators took Korea`s geopolitical significance into account and the British emphasized economic importance of Korea.
