Abstract
This qualitative study investigates choice of overseas educational destination, university life experiences and future plan of international students enrolling at a university in Seoul, Korea. Previous studies on international students in Korea by taking either too macro or instrumental approaches, have often failed to provide micro-level in-depth understanding on this new sojourner group, which is increasingly important in Korea. This study conducted autobiographic essay analysis and in-depth interview methodology. In-depth interviews with eleven participants from China, Southeast Asia and others, mainly Western, countries, were conducted from October to November 2010. Results are as follows. Firstly, their choice of Korea reveals aspirations of students to acquire global capital as well as to have cultural experiences and opportunities in the globalizing world. The former was more evident among students from China and Southeast Asia, whereas the latter was more so for students from the West. Secondly, their university experiences in Korea reveal their critical perspectives. Thirdly, evaluation of academic life at a Korean university shows both critical and favorable comments. Their evaluation shows their judgement, using their countries of origin for a reference point but also reveals their views on Korean way of interaction between students and professors in Korea.
