Abstract

Historiographical in its approach, this article aims to explore and correct some prevalent mistakes and errors concerning biographical accounts of Induk Pahk(1897-1980), one of the most neglected female educators and autobiographers not only in Korean academia but abroad as well. On the assumption that Pahk was one of the important female leaders who played a pivotal role in modern Korea, this article pays special attention to some major, as well as minor, mistakes and errors surrounding her biographical data. A closer research of historical data reveals that most of biographical accounts of Induk Pahk are for a variety of reasons insufficient, vague, and inaccurate. Pahk, for instance, was born in 1896, not in 1897 ― as many scholars have wrongly assumed so far. Her birthplace was not Pyongyang but a small village in Chinnampo, Pyongnam Province, which is located approximately 65km southwest of the largest city in North Korea. Informations on her marriage and divorce and on her activities during the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea and after its emancipation from Japanese rule are most flagrantly inaccurate. This article further argues that Induk Pahk made a significant contribution not only to Korean literature but also to Korean American literature in particular and Asian American literature in general. In sum, the future scholars of Induk Pahk will be prone to build the critical or scholarly castles in the air unless some mistakes and errors relating to her biographical accounts should be properly taken into account and corrected.
